Emergency crews scrambled to the scene in Catforth, Lancashire, on October 27 after the youth was found by a care worker.
The boy has now been named as 16-year-old Lucas Michael Johnson at an inquest opening at Preston Coroners’ Court last week.
Area Coroner Kate Bisset said that Lucas normally lived in Grimsby but was a resident at the children’s home at the time of his death.
A pre-inquest review is due to be held on November 28 and will decide what type of inquest into the youngster’s death needs to be held.
An Article 2 inquest investigates deaths to comply with the procedural obligations of Article 2 of the European Convention on Human Rights, which protects the right to life.
